Abstract

The aim of this paper is to research some contemporary artistic/political practices with the concept of ‘inventing controversial space’ by Jacques Rancière by focusing on the similarity between the political and the aesthetical. According to Rancière, arts and politics are the reverse sides of the same practices that redistribute the sensible and invent controversial spaces. This similarity can be found as long as both are exceptional categories of which the characteristics are to have no principles and to be ‘aesthetical’. Applying Rancière's theory to art criticism, Claire Bishop defends Jeremy Deller's <The Battle of Orgreave> in that it shows ethical and aesthetical ambiguity. But, the contradiction between certainty and ambiguity has a risk of just switching the positions in an existing system without making any new terms emerge. In order to find proper examples, then, this paper reviews the ‘artistic’ aspects of Occupy Wall Street (OWS) movement that has not been regarded as an art practice. By holding places without any specific requirement, participants in OWS present an activism without acting and a labor without laboring. They show an ironical merge of autonomy and politics. Until now, the art practices inspired by OWS have shown little fruitful results. But a recent Korean art project titled <Politics of the Rooftop> present a possibility. Occupying the rooftops (sometimes illegally) in Mullae-dong, Seoul, the artists make performances and try to transform these exceptional and surplus spaces into universal ones. The surplus and the universal are non-interchangeable categories. To make these two equal is related to a requirement of an universal right to free access to all spaces and thereby to redistribute the sensible.
