Abstract
his study empirically investigates the effects of credit card loan (card loan) supply expansion on the financial performance and funding conditions of Korean credit card companies. Using panel data from seven major credit card companies between Q1 2015 and Q1 2025, the analysis examines how various indicators of card loan supply—including outstanding balance, new issuance, and card loan revenue—impact profitability (ROA), asset soundness (NPL ratio), and funding costs through a dynamic panel regression model. The results show that expanding card loan supply has a significant positive effect on short-term profitability. However, increases in card loan balance and revenue are associated with a deterioration in asset soundness (higher NPL ratios) and a significant rise in funding costs. This suggests that while a card loan-focused asset expansion strategy can improve short-term profits, it may also lead to negative long-term consequences such as weakened asset quality and higher funding burdens. The study recommends that credit card companies avoid focusing solely on short-term performance and instead strengthen risk management, maintain soundness, and diversify asset portfolios for long-term sustainability. For policymakers, the findings highlight the need for enhanced supervision and regulation to manage systemic risks, such as growth in non-performing loans and increased funding costs, stemming from aggressive card loan expansion.
