초록
Kevin O’Rourke (1939-2020) was an Irish-born Columban Father and one of the most respected translators of Korean siga 詩歌 (poetry and song), especially sijo 時調 poems. He translated more than 2,000 works of siga and received various awards and honors, including a presidential citation in 2009. Nevertheless, there are few studies that discuss his view of how siga should and can be translated. Against this backdrop, the present study investigates his English translation of Yun Sŏndo’s “Ŏbu sasi sa” 漁父四時詞 (The Fisherman’s Calendar), a 40-verse sijo cycle that depicts a fisherman’s life in the four seasons. The main focus is on the sijo formats (chang 章 division, line breaks, indentation, refrains, etc.) employed in his 1987 translation and his 1988/2001 revisions, respectively. These formats are also compared with those used by six other translators who rendered into English either part or the whole of the same original.
