초록
Kevin O’Rourke (1939-2020) was an Irish missionary priest and one of the most foremost translators of Korean literature. He translated more than 2,000 poems, including traditional works of shiga such as hyangga, hanshi, and shijo. This study investigates his translations of Shilla hyangga in three respects, with an emphasis on the form of the ten-line hyangga. First, O’Rourke’s translations are compared with the ‘source texts’ or Korean translations of the songs transcribed in hyangch’al. Second, translations by O’Rourke and other translators such as Peter H. Lee and Chung Chong-wha are compared in terms of line arrangement, interjection, and capitalization. Third, multiple anthologies are examined to find out whether there were changes in O’Rourke’s format for translation. Findings show that (1) O’Rourke found it unnecessary to reproduce the explicit and implicit form of the ten-line hyangga, (2) other translators were more strict about the form of hyangga, and (3) O’Rourke did not revise his format, unlike what he did for shijo translation. The article concludes with a brief discussion of the findings.
