‘근대’문학이라고 하는 것은 전근대 문학의 자기 전개를 통한 근대문학으로의 전환을 의미한 것이 아니다. 문학을 한 양식, 즉 특정한 방식의 글쓰기를 의미한다면, 문학은 과거에도 존재했고 현재는 물론 미래에도 계속해서 존재할 것이다. 이러한 문학에게 있어 위기란 존재하지 않는다. 그러나 현재 심심찮게 제기되는 문학의 위기설에서 지칭하는 문학은 단순히 이러한 문학을 지칭하는 것이 아님이 분명하다. 여기에는 문학이라는 기호에 부여한 근대의 독특한 아우라가 존재하는 것이다.본 논문은 바로 문학의 근대성이라는 것이 문학 ‘재료’로부터 귀납되는 것이 아니라 호출되고 구성되었다는 점으로부터 출발한다. 그리고 이러한 호출의 주체가 바로 비평정신이며, 이러한 비평정신이 어떻게 형성되었는지를 분석하고 있다. 나아가 비평적 태도, 혹은 마인드가 형성되는 경로를 파악하기 위해 19세기 말 강학회, 강습회등과 같은 조직과 신문, 잡지매체를 중심으로 한 담론공간을 분석하고, 이러한 공간으로부터 어떻게 비평정신이 발양되었는가를 보여주고 있다. 그리고 정치적 담론을 중심으로 한 비평정신이 어떻게 문학을 호출하게 되고, 그 결과 문학의 근대성, 즉 문학의 근대적 존재방식과 비평의 관계를 분석하고 있다.이러한 분석을 통해 본 논문은 근대 문학이 비평정신에 의해 끊임없이 호출되면서 자기변화를 이루어왔으며, 문학의 근대성은 바로 그 비평정신에 의해 요청되어진 것이라는 점을 밝혔다. 그리고 그 비평정신이 자기 전개과정에서 자기를 부정하는 권위적 계몽활동으로 변질되고, 그로 인해 근대문학의 근거인 비평정신의 약화를 초래했음을 지적하였다.
Abstract
'Modern' literature is not mean that which has been developed from pre-modern literature, also can be induced from the literary 'material'. it has a specific meaning that is given in the 20th century. that is what is called modernity of literature. What make literature 'modern' literature? This essay regards it as critical mind. As a critical attitude, critical mind is formed in the late 19th century, and is closely connected with some academic societies, newspaper, magazine medium etc. Such some thoughts as Kang You wei, Liang Qi chao, organized some short courses of study and speech meetings. The manuscripts of lecture of that was published in the magazine and newspaper at the same time. these method of writing was close to comment or critique. though all the topics is on political and social thoughts, on the basis of it, they call literature on the front of history. In the result, modernity of literature is defined by critical mind.
