이 연구는 한국 근대 소설의 언어가 갱신되고 안정되는 과정을 추적하면서 그 역사적 성격을 검토하는 것을 일차적인 과제로 삼는다. 한국의 근대 소설은 문자와 문장, 문체의 층위에서 복잡하고도 치열한 각축을 벌이며 종국적으로 ‘순 한글의 한국어 문장’에 도달했다. 이 도정에서 가장 핵심적인 역할을 담당한 것은 번역 및 번안 소설이다. 한국의 번역 및 번안 소설이 수행한 언어 경합과 선택은 근대 소설의 양식 경쟁뿐만 아니라 매체의 물질적 조건과도 밀접하게 연관되어 있다. 따라서 1900년대 후반부터 1920년대 초반에 걸쳐 근대 소설의 양식과 매체, 그리고 언어에 관여하고 있는 다양한 조건을 입체적으로 분석하고자 했다. 특히 매일신보가 소설 양식에 대한 새로운 관념을 안착시키는 동시에 신소설의 언어적 정통성을 계승해 냄으로써 근대 소설의 언어적 전망을 성공적으로 구현했다는 점에 주목했다. 이 연구는 초창기의 근대 소설사를 새로운 시각으로 조명하는 한편 근대 소설어의 역사성을 적극적으로 재평가하는 발판이 될 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to study the language of Korean modern novel and its literary historical features. The language of Korean modern novel had been established through extremely complicated and keen competition. As a result, 'Korean sentence composed with only Hangeul' gained the final victory as the language of modern novel. Through this historical process translated or adapted novels had performed the most important role. The language of translated or adapted novels was closely connected with a style and medium of modern novel. Therefore various kinds of condition have to been analyzed in three dimensions which are concerned with a style, medium, and language of Korean modern novel. Especially serial novels printed on Mae-il-sin-bo in 1910's are worth of notice. Because those stabilized a style of modern novel and succeeded to the linguistic legitimacy of sin-so-seol. In conclusion, a study of translated or adapted novels from the late 1900's to the early 1920's is the key to reappraisal of the language of Korean modern novel and the historicity of it.
