Abstract
The late nineteenth century, though often characterized by an overwhelming Western penetration into Oriental life forms, also witnessed the intellectual traditions of Asia transferred to the West, one of which was the historiography. This paper, by examining books, newspaper and magazine articles, and parliamentary debates, investigates the process of the transfer with focus on two rival Oriental historiographical traditions, bringing to light the factors in leading Westerners to prefer one historical narrative over the other in this period. The examination will show that the British accepted the Japanese historiographical tradition as standard knowledge and, as for the Korean tradition, either were simply ignorant of or dismissed it as a false argument saturated with a strong form of ethnocentrism. And it will identify the following as factors that contributed to British favoritism of Japanese historical accounts. First, relatively easy access to Japanese sources and familiarity with Japanese historical studies gave the Japanese narrative a head start in its competition with that of Koreans for the status of knowledge within the British’s epistemic world. Furthermore, late nineteenth-century Japanese historians’ earlier adoption of modern historical methods than their counterparts in Korea rendered the Japanese narrative more legible and objective to the British reader than its rival. Third, the sense of kinship the British felt with the Japanese owing to Japan’s rapid Westernization and their negative image of Korea as ‘an Asiatic microcosm’ or, in a word, perception played a part in deciding which narrative to accept as the best representative of the truth. Lastly, the Japanese historical narrative appeared to explain better than its Korean competitor the contemporary situation of East Asia where Japan was trying to make inroads upon the Korean Peninsula. In doing so, I try to shed light on how one historiographical perspective, in the process of transfer, becomes hegemonic over another.
