초록

사례연구는 사회과학연구에 있어서 중요한 연구방법임에도 불구하고, 학문적 가치를 인정받지 못하였다. 이 논문은 사례연구의 가치를 확립하기 위한 시도이다. 이 논문은 크게 두 부분으로 나뉘어 진다. 첫째, 사례연구의 학문적 가치는 과학주의와 상대주의를 극복해야만 가능하다고 보고, 이들을 비판하며, 비판적 실재론에 바탕을 둔 사례연구 방법의 재평가를 시도한다. 또, 사례연구에 대한 오해를 해소하고, 사례연구설계의 장점을 제시한다. 둘째, 1960년대 초의 한국의 노동정책의 전환을 연구한 필자의 논문을 바탕으로 삼아, 좋은 사례연구가 갖추어야 할 사항- 사례의 특이성, 쟁점 중심의 접근, 맥락에 주목하기, 사례선택과 자료접근성, 사례와 새로운 이론-을 논의한다.

Abstract

A case study method is given an inferior status in the realm of social sciences, notwithstanding its wide use. This paper attempts to establish its value as a scientific method. The paper is divided into two major parts. In the first part, we critically evaluate scientism and relativism which underestimate the value of the case study method as a scientific method. We provide a fresh look at the case study method from a viewpoint of critical realism. We also dispel misunderstandings about the case study method and discuss the merits of the case method. In the second part, we use as illustration the author's article on the Korean labor policy change in the early 1960s to discuss the required qualities of good case study. We discuss the nature of a case, issue-oriented approach, attention to the context, case selection and access to data, and the relation between case studies and theoretical insight.
