Abstract
The controversy between quantitative and qualitative researchers sharing the positivist epistemology has been longstanding, but contributed to systemize case study methods. To understand how well these advances are reflected in public administration research, this study analyzes articles in the Korean Public Administration Review beginning in 2001. These are analyzed in terms of research purpose, causal explanations, generalization, concepts and measurements, and case selection methods. The results show that they are mostly written deductively and more concerned with theoretical and conceptual discussion than with the empirical analysis of the cases. Another problem is overgeneralization including many policy implications. In sum, they could be regarded as variable-oriented studies rather than case-oriented studies. However, it is difficult to argue that they are following recommendations proposed by the quantitative camp.
