Abstract

The capital of an ancient state functioned as a center of politics, administration, economy, military affairs, and religion, incorporating various facilities. However, in the case of Gaya, sufficient archaeological evidence confirming such a capital has not yet been identified. Nevertheless, in Ara Gaya, the planned arrangement of earthen fortifications, special buildings, water management facilities, production facilities, and defensive fortifications provides a clear picture of the developmental process of a capital. Ara Gaya occupied a geopolitically significant position during the expansion of Silla and Baekje into Gaya territory. Additionally, as it bordered Geumgwan Gaya, Sogaya, and Daegaya, the construction of a defensive network would have been of utmost importance. Therefore, understanding how Ara Gaya's capital defense system was structured is a crucial research topic. This study analyzes the key facilities and structures of the royal capital of Ara Gaya, with a particular focus on its defense system, to examine aspects of the Gaya capital system. From the mid-5th century onward, the royal burial area was established on the Malisan hill, while the royal palace site at Gayari Earthen Fortress and the flood control facility at Gayari Embankment were constructed, marking the full-scale development of the capital. Notably, a large temple, intended to strengthen royal authority, was strategically located to overlook both the ruler’s burial area and the royal palace site. To defend the capital, fortifications were reinforced, with a dense defense network concentrated to the south and southwest of the present-day Gaya-eup area. Additionally, the eastern fortifications were further strengthened in response to Silla’s westward expansion. This defensive network gradually expanded in accordance with changing political circumstances. In conclusion, the structural arrangement of Ara Gaya's royal capital and its fortification system serve as an important case study that illustrates the process by which Gaya developed its capital system.
