Abstract
Jama Sanseong is a Tefort-style stone fortress constructed in an elliptical shape on the ridge of Jama San (elevation 240.7m). The base of the fortress wall was built vertically using elongated rectangular stones in the area, and the circumference is about 450m. This type of stone fortress closely resembles the ruling place fortress of Silla’s villages or counties built along the southern coastal during the mid-6th century. Based on historical records, it is inferred that Jamasanseong corresponds to Ungji Village, Ungji Seong, or Ungji ruling place fortress from the Three Kingdoms period. However, the presence of overlapping stone structures inside and outside the fortress-similar in appearance to the stone mound tombs of Eunhyeon-ri, Ulju County suggests that its original function as an administrative fortress was later altered. This change is associated with the establishment of Ungji Sosa(small state-sanctioned shrines), one of Silla’s 24 Sosa, within the fortress. The additional irregular stone structures built inside and outside the fortress represent this transformation, a pattern also observed at other sosa sites. Therefore, the existing Jama Sanseong is neither a Waeseong nor a later construction but was initially built as Silla’s Ungji fortress during the Three Kingdoms period. It continued to serve as the administrative center for Ungji County after its reorganization. Over time, the presence of Ungji Sosa within and around the fortress added a new layer of historical and cultural significance, transforming it into a complex, multi-functional site.
