Abstract

This study explores how étude—a form of performative reenactment—enables individuals to re-experience painful past memories through the body and integrate them into self-narratives, ultimately leading to self-understanding. The researcher analyzes three étude performances—Sound, Adolescence, and Uncle—created as part of a graduate course in theater and literary therapy. Each performance follows a narrative structure of “beginning–middle–end” and is accompanied by a post-performance journaling process that facilitates reflective engagement with the experience. Focusing on performative embodiment, interaction with others, and the reconstruction of emotional memory, this study examines how these elements contribute to the transformation of personal experience into coherent narratives. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of post-performance writing and dialogue in shaping narrative identity and emotional integration. The findings suggest that étude does not merely repeat past memories but functions as a creative event that generates new meanings and emotional shifts. It emerges as a self-healing practice that supports the reorganization of identity through embodied performance and narrative articulation. While this is a single-case study based on the researcher’s own experience, it offers meaningful insight into the therapeutic potential of performative self-narration, highlighting the intersection of body, memory, and narrative as a space for personal transformation.
