Abstract

This article shares the same concerns and examines environmental performances and performances in Korea since the 1990s. The 1990s, when Korea, the only “developmentalist” country in Asia to achieve both economic advancement and political democratization, came to the world stage, was paradoxically a period when global environmental pollution issues were being discussed and spreading among the general public. This is also related to the context in which the grand discourses of the 1980s disappeared and environmental movements gained relative attention in literature and criticism alongside discourses on women and the new generation. However, the environmental discourse of that time cannot be diagnosed as the “age of the environment” based solely on its discursive revival and increased interest. Starting in the late 1980s, civic groups derived from student movements and local movements, such as the Environmental Movement United Front and the Green Alliance, began to make environmental issues visible. This marked the beginning of environmental movement groups in the 1990s, which strongly imprinted environmental issues on the public and the media through performances or held “cultural events” that included various performing arts and performances. The experience of holding performance-based rallies that combined banners, street theater, moving flags, dance, song, and the reading of manifestos at large and small gatherings was reinterpreted in the context of the 1990s environmental movement and emerged in new forms. This study analyzes the Earth Day events planned by environmental organizations, performances aimed at visualizing pollution issues, and the environmental theater of the Han River Theater and Ugeumchi in the 1990s. By examining these, the study historicizes the period when cultural politics of climate justice were articulated in sharp ways, ranging from critiques of harmful substances encountered in industrialized environments to critiques of global industrial structures, energy use patterns, and the issues of “regions” where environmental problems arose. By examining this important historical source of critical climate justice art actions as an “old future”, we will revisit the time we have overlooked.
