Abstract

This paper examines the theatrical exploration of “non-human performance” in B BE BEE, an ecological play featuring a human actor’s attempt—and ultimate failure—to embody nonhuman beings, “bees”. It begins by analyzing efforts to represent the non-human onstage and how such attempts reveal persistent anthropocentric biases. Although the actor performs bee-like gestures and sounds, these ultimately re-inscribe conventional human theatrical codes. A key moment occurs when the actor explicitly declares, “I am not a bee,” signaling a meta-awareness of the limits of non-human embodiment and exposing the failure of representation. This moment of failure destabilizes traditional theatrical presumptions and highlights the inherent impossibility of representation. Finally, it explains how the 'failure of non-human performance' meets the 'failure of representation' through the ideas of Cormac Power and Sara Jane Bailes on the failure of performance art, and reads the meaning of failure in this performance through Carl Lavery's 'Weak Theater'.
