Abstract

This study set out to clarify the transmission of Confucian knowledge and the development of the doctoral system between Baekje and Wa during the 6th and 7th centuries. Beginning in the reign of King Dongseong, Baekje cultivated Confucian scholars, and by the time of King Muryeong it dispatched Doctors of the Five Classics to Wa. Under King Seong, Baekje entered a new stage in which it invited specialist academics from the Liang dynasty—such as Doctors of the Book of Odes and of Ritual—to integrate Confucian learning into the principles of state governance. Meanwhile, Wa consistently invited Baekje’s doctors and technicians to acquire essential knowledge for administrative writing and the interpretation of diplomatic documents. Furthermore, Wa sent students to China as part of its missions to the Sui, enabling them to study there for extended periods; upon their return, these scholars contributed to establishing the intellectual foundations necessary for the formation of the early Japanese state.
