이 글은 충북지역 백제 토성에서 확인된 철기생산에 대해 시론적으로 검토한 것이다. 백제는 건국 이후 도성을 비롯하여 영역을 확대하는 과정에서 지방에도 토성을 축조하기 시작하였다. 특히 백제가 충북으로 진출하면서, 각 요충지에 토성을 쌓았다. 최근 조사가 활발해지면서 이 지역의 토성과 그 주변에서 철기생산과 관련된 유물이 확인되고 있다. 또한 충북지역은 토성 주변에 대규모 제철조업이 이루어진 유적이 다수 분포하고 있어, 철 소재를 공급받기에 유리한 곳이다. 철기생산과 관련된 토성은 충주 탄금대 토성･장미산성, 음성 망이산성 내성, 청주 정북동 토성, 증평 추성산성, 진천 대모산성, 괴산 서부리 토성 등이 있다. 토성에서 제철공정은 주변에서 철소재를 공급받아 정련 이후의 공정이 이루어졌으며, 일부는 철기를 수리하거나, 마연 정도의 작업만이 이루어지기도 하였다. 토성으로의 철소재는 주변에 대규모 제철단지에서 생산된 것들이 공급되었다. 각 지역별로 충주지역은 칠금동 유적과 용교리 유적에서 생산된 철소재가 토성으로 공급되었다. 진천･증평 지역은 석장리･구산리 유적군에서 생산된 철소재가 공급되었던 것으로 보인다. 한편 토성에서의 철기 생산공정은 크게 5개 유형으로 구분할 수 있다. 이 가운데 철 소재 생산과 함께 중간소재가 되는 철정(鐵鋌) 제작 및 상급(上級) 철기제작이 가능한 유적은 충주 탄금대 토성이다. 이 유적은 아직까지 충북지역에서는 유일한 사례라고 할 수 있다. 2유형은 중간소재나 중상급의 철기를 제작하는 형태로 증평 추성산성과 충주 장미산성이 있다. 3유형과 4유형은 지금까지는 확인되지 않았다. 5유형은 청주 정북동 토성, 진천 대모산성, 음성 망이산성, 괴산 서부리 토성이 있다. 이 유형의 토성은 주변유적에서 생산된 철기를 공급받아 간단한 철기의 제작이나 수리, 재처리 정도의 수준에 작업만이 이루어졌다. 다만 이러한 유형 분류는 아직까지 토성과 그 주변에 대한 조사가 미진한 점을 고려하면, 이러한 구분은 시론에 해당된다. 추후 토성과 그 주변에서 철기생산과 관련된 조사결과에 따라 그 유형은 달라질 수 있음을 밝혀둔다.
Abstract
This article examines the characteristics of ironware production in Baekje's toseong(⼟城) located in the Chungbuk region. After the founding of the country, Baekje began to build toseong in the process of expanding its territory, including the capital toseong(都城). In particular, as Baekje advanced to the Chungcheong area, toseong was built in each key point. When the investigation is active, the relics related to iron production in Chungbuk area and surrounding around the Chungbuk region. In addition, large-scale composition around toseong is distributed, so it is a place where it can receive iron material. Among the fortresses in the Chungbuk regio, relics related to iron production have been identified or large-scale steel relics have been distributed around Chungju Tangeumdae toseong, Jangmi Fortress, Eumseong Mangi Fortress, Cheongju Jeongbuk-dong toseong, Jeungpyeong Chuseong Fortress, Jincheon Daemon Fortress, and Goesan Seobu-ri toseong. The steelmaking process in the toseong was mainly carried out after refining by receiving iron materials, and some of the work was done to repair iron. Iron production on toseong can be divided into five types. Type 1 is a place where higher iron can be manufactured along with the production of iron bar(鐵鋌) which is supplied with iron materials and becomes an intermediate material, and the corresponding ruins are the Chungju Tangeumdae toseong. Type 2 is the production of intermediate materials or upper-middle-class ironware, and there are Jeungpyeong Chuseong Fortress and Chungju Jangmi Fortress. The remains of Type 3 and Type 4 have not yet been identified. Type 5 is a location where completed ironware can be supplied from the ruins where the entire process from smelting to iron production was carried out, and only work was done at the level of simple iron production, repair, and reprocessing. There are Type 5 : Eumseong Mangi Fortress, Cheongju Jeongbuk-dong toseong, Jincheon Daemon Fortress, and Goesan Seobu-ri toseong. However, given that the investigation into the castle is still insufficient, this classification corresponds to poetry, and its characteristics may vary depending on the results of the investigation within the castle.
