Abstract

This study examines the historical reality of the crown decoration (冠飾) and garment color (衣色) regulations recorded in the Samguk sagi, under the entry for the second month of the 27th year of King Goi’s reign (260 CE). Although this record has been generally interpreted as a retrospective reflection of the Sabi-period institutional system, its specific placement in King Goi’s 27th year and the unique combination of regulations—unattested in other historical sources—suggest that it may indeed reflect changes that actually occurred in late 3rd-century Baekje. During this period, intensifying social stratification, political upheavals, and changes in external relations created the need to further subdivide and clarify the hierarchy within the ruling class. As a result, reforms related to elite dress codes emerged. These reforms were likely informed by the crown and garment regulations of the Later Han and Cao Wei official attire systems, which Baekje could have accessed through exchanges with the Lelang and Daifang commanderies. Based on the Yufu zhi (輿服志) chapters in the Book of the Later Han (Hou Hanshu) and Book of Jin (Jinshu), the Later Han and Cao Wei systems conveyed specific rank and status through distinct crown types, while differentiating levels within the bureaucracy primarily through contrasts in garment color. Through interaction with the commanderies and the influx of commandery residents, Baekje could have obtained detailed knowledge of these systems and accordingly established its own regulations dividing elite crown types and garment colors. The actual content of the crown and garment regulations instituted during King Goi’s reign likely stipulated that officials holding formal ranks wore crowns similar to the Chinese zhe (幘) and garments in red-toned hues, while lower-ranking elites adopted traditional crown forms and wore black-toned or otherwise unspecified colors. The implementation of these dress regulations was likely selective and situational-enforced primarily during court assemblies at the Namdang (南堂) or on occasions of state ritual.
