Abstract
The eschatology in Colossians and Philemon are quite different from one another, although these two documents were in the past often grouped together on the basis of literary considerations. Colossians is characterised by a strong realised eschatology, incorporating and overwhelming references to the future while at the same time building strongly on spatial concepts. Philemon is a public, “personal” letter with an unexpressed yet in attendant eschatological perspective primarily focussed on the future, as can be inferred from the particular way in which the letter’s central issue – the situation of the slave Onesimus – is presented and addressed.
