(God’s expression of His righteousness),

Abstract

Paul’s interpretation of Christ’s death rests upon two convictions concerning the meaning of that death. That is, 1) Christ’s death was “the sacrifice” which established the “new covenant”(h` kainh. diaqh,kh), and 2) this sacrifice is an act of God, carried out in righteous fulfillment of His promise to Abraham. As many scholars suggest, Paul never hesitates among competing theories of atonement. Instead, he interprets Christ’s death as “God’s expression of His righteousness” toward all nation, that is, the sacrifice which established “the new covenant” accomplishing God’s promise given to Abraham in Genesis 12:3. However, Paul’s expression about the result of Christ’s death appear in various ways. Paul uses extensive images such as “reconciliation (katallagh), ,” “redemption(evxagora, zein),” “salvation(avpolu, trwsij),” “de- liverance(r`u,esqai)” to describe what God accomplished through the cross. Variety of such expressions made several competing arguments about atonement in Pauline epistles among Pauline scholars. But such symbols Paul had chosen, and the contents filled in those symbols were determined by his fundamental conviction about the meaning of Christ’s death. Paul often expresses the death simply as “sin-offering,” “passover” giving the salvation or “reconciliation” because these ideas are compatible with his core convictions concerning the cross, or express various aspects of his convictions more clearly. In conlusion, various expressions such as “righteousness(dikaiosu,nh),” “redemption(evxagoraz, ein),” “salvation(avpolu, trwsij),” “deliverance(r`ue, sqai)” given to us as a result of Christ’s death, do not express different ideas from one another, nor contradict one another. Especially, as we examined, “God’s righteousness(dikaiosu,nh tou/ qeou)/ ” and “reconciliation(katallagh), ” are not different ideas because all those expressions essentially contain covenantal concept. Therefore Paul, in his epistles, using the expressions “God’s righteousness” and “reconciliation” interchangeably, describes the covenantal meanings of Christ’s death more clearly and more abundantly.
