이 연구는 프랑스어 담화표지 ‘Je sais pas’에 있는 다양한 담화적 기능을 살펴보고 한국어 자막번역에서 나타나는 번역 양상을 고찰한다. JSP는 프랑스어에서 대표적인 절 단위 담화표지로서 일상 구어에서 그 사용 빈도가 매우 높고 일상 대화의 구어성을 흉내 낸 영화 및 드라마 속 대화에서도 빈번하게 사용된다. 본 연구의 말뭉치를 통해 JSP에는 사태나 발화에 대한 화자의 불확실성, 미 결정성 등을 표현하는 양태적 가치가 있고 발화 상의 책임 회피, 거리두기 등의 다양한 담화기능이 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. JSP의 다양한 담화기능에 대해 한국어 자막번역에서는 ‘글쎄’, ‘모르겠다’, ‘아마’, ‘혹시’ 등으로 대응되어 담화적 일관성과 화자의 의도를 반영한 번역 전략이 활용되었으나 JSP의 담화 기능이 한국어 번역이 갖는 담화적 기능과 항상 일치하지 않음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 결과를 통해, 본 연구는 간과되기 쉬운 담화표지 번역 방법 연구에 활용될 수 있으며 자막번역에서도 목표언어의 담화 기능의 일관성과 구어성의 최적화를 고려한 번역전략 수립에 활용될 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
Abstract
The discourse functions of source language text and target language text do not always align in translation. Therefore, it is important to maintain the consistency of discourse function in the translation process of discourse markers. This study examines the various discourse functions of the French discourse marker “Je sais pas” and considers the translation patterns in Korean subtitles. “Je sais pas” is a typical single-clause discourse marker in French, and it is used frequently in everyday colloquial speech. It is also frequently used in the dialogue of movies and dramas that imitate the colloquial nature of everyday conversation. Through the close examination of our corpus, we showed the discourse functions of “Je sais pas”, such as having modal value to express the speaker’s uncertainty or indecision about a situation or utterance, and avoiding or distancing oneself from the responsibility of the utterance. We also confirmed the translation patterns of “Je sais pas” in Korean subtitles, such as the modal markers or discourse markers that are translated into Korean as “글쎄”, “모르겠다”, “아마”, and “혹시”.
