Abstract
This paper aims to critically compare and examine new materialism and Spinoza’s philosophy in relation to the Anthropocene. With the escalating climate crisis, the Anthropocene and its associated issues have become a central concern not only for the natural sciences but also for the social sciences and humanities. If the term Anthropocene refers to the situation where human agency, affecting the Earth system, has led to changes in the Earth system (specifically, phenomena such as climate crisis, biodiversity destruction, and damage to marine ecosystems), endangering human survival, then it can be considered as a scientific and normative designation. Consequently, the concept of the Anthropocene becomes an “essentially contested concept” (W.B. Gallie) that generates diverse theoretical and ethical positions. New materialism can be seen as a perspective that seeks to address the crisis of the Anthropocene by affirming the agency of matter and moving away from anthropocentrism to establish a new relationship between humans and the Earth system. However, despite its theoretical contributions, new materialism appears to have significant challenges and limitations. I believe that Spinoza’s philosophy, understood as a paradoxical materialism, can provide suitable theoretical resources to overcome these challenges and limitations. In this paper, I will present Spinoza’s paradoxical materialism through five theses to demonstrate its potential in addressing these issues.
