Abstract
This case study analyzes that discourse markers are linguistic expressions, frequently observed in the spoken language, which do not have a propositional meaning but carries a new meaning at the discourse level. A lot of research has been done on discourse markers in various dimensions both in English and Korean, but there is not much research on their translation between the two languages. This study aims to examine the uses of diverse discourse markers in the lines of the movie About time(2013) and analyze how they are translated in the subtitle, focusing on ‘well’ and ‘you know’ which are the two most frequently spotted discourse markers in the movie script and at the same time play a significant role in demonstrating major characteristics of the main characters. The findings of this study demonstrate that diverse discourse markers were found in the lines of this romantic comedy movie and similar with previous research on discourse marker translation, most of the discourse makers were omitted in translation and the most frequent discourse marker ‘well’ mainly appeared in the beginning of a sentence and most frequently served as a ‘hesitator,’ which showed the usage of discourse marker can be related with characteristics of the main character. This study also attempts to provide translation alternatives to discourse markers that are omitted in translation in consideration of textual and audiovisual contexts as well as temporal and spatial constraints.
