Abstract

This study investigated early childhood teachers’ perceptions, practices, difficulties, and needs regarding singing new songs with young children. The subjects were 424 teachers at early childhood education institutions nationwide. Based on a literature review and expert consultations, a survey questionnaire comprising 21 items was developed across tree domains: (1) current practices in singing new songs, (2) teachers’ perceptions, and (3) perceived difficulties and needs. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics via SPSS 22.0. The findings revealed that most of the teachers recognized the importance of singing new songs in early childhood education. The most common frequency of implementation was once or twice a month, and creative children's songs were the most frequent genre. The greatest challenges reported were providing instrumental accompaniment and integrating singing into play-based activities. In terms of support needs, the teachers most frequently expressed a desire for workshops that would help them integrate singing new songs with play experiences. This study is significant in that it provides foundational data on the current perceptions, practices, and needs of teachers regarding one of the most widely implemented music activities in early childhood settings—singing new songs—and offers implications for developing diverse, integrated music programs for young children.
