Abstract
This qualitative study explores how young children and teachers perceive and experience play, with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of play within early childhood education settings. Using photo elicitation interviews, data were collected from children aged 3 to 5 and their teachers, asking them to share their most enjoyable play experiences in educational contexts. The findings reveal that the children tended to view play as relationship-centered, engaging with peers, play materials, and familiar popular culture. Their narratives emphasized autonomy, sensory experiences, and the unpredictable nature of play. In contrast, the teachers focused on moments of creativity, surprising reactions, and situations that carried educational meaning, interpreting play primarily through an educational lens. While some similarities were observed, the perspectives of the children and teachers on the meaning and significance of play diverged in important ways. These differences suggest that such gaps need to be acknowledged and bridged for play-based curricula to be meaningfully implemented in early childhood settings. This study provides foundational insights into play as a multidimensional and relational experience, offering implications for rethinking the understanding and practice of play in early childhood education.
