Abstract
This study compares and analyzes the Sequential Process Model (SPM) and the Emergent Process Model (EPM) in relation to osmosis and proposes a method for enabling students to intuitively understand the microscopic processes of osmosis using an EPM-based simulation. The aim is to address existing limitations in osmosis education. While the SPM explains osmosis as a phenomenon driven by concentration differences, the EPM describes osmosis as an emergent process resulting from the random collisions of molecules. Using the SPM is effective for recognizing the correlation between concentration and osmosis, but it has the drawback of making it difficult to understand the causal relationship behind this correlation. In contrast, the EPM provides an explanation where osmosis emerges from the random collisions of microscopic molecules. Although the EPM requires an understanding of complex systems, it offers the advantage of elucidating the underlying causal relationships. Historically, the challenge of modeling complex systems has hindered the active adoption of the EPM in explaining natural phenomena. However, with advancements of Artificial Intelligence(AI) in education, it has become feasible to use AI to implement complex models as simulations. Consequently, this study developed an EPM-based simulation using ChatGPT to demonstrate how osmosis emerges from the random collision of molecules. The EPM has the advantage of preventing misconceptions about osmosis, as reported in previous studies. Therefore, when EPM-based simulations are introduced alongside the commonly used SPM in chemistry education, students can achieve a deeper understanding of the osmosis phenomenon.
