Abstract
This study examined the gaze awareness and public self-consciousness of learners, focusing on their psychological and behavioral responses during real-time online university classes. Previously conducted investigations have predominantly highlighted the technological and instructional effectiveness of online classes. However, this study explored how learners perceive the gaze of others during classes and how they manage their appearances, backgrounds, and speech-related elements in response to their assessments. This mixed-method study classified public self-consciousness into three domains: appearance, background, and speech. A survey was administered to 645 university students, and in-depth interviews were conducted with 15 participants comprising male and female students from coeducational and women’s universities. The study revealed that learners generally exhibit high public self-consciousness, and female students display particularly heightened awareness of their appearances and backgrounds. The interview results disclosed that learners adjust their behaviors in strategic ways to tackle continuous exposure through webcams and the ambiguity they sense in the gazes of others. Psychological and behavioral differences were also noted based on gender, class size, and type of university. The study found that real-time online classes represent complex socio-psychological environments. These results hold practical implications for the design of learner-centered instructional systems in educational technology.
