Abstract
This study explored the collaborative experiences of seven novice instructional designers with generative AI, viewed through Barad’s (2007) agential realism framework. Employing qualitative methods, data were gathered via interviews, prompt logs, and instructional design artifacts, then analyzed using diffractive analysis to trace relational meanings emerging as data and theory intertwined. Three key phenomena were identified. First, participants continually renegotiated their roles with AI through iterative prompting, dynamically distributing agency in the human-AI relationship (boundary negotiation). Second, they embraced AI as a thinking partner, thereby reconfiguring their professional identities and cognitive processes (identity reconfiguration). Third, participants critically addressed AI’s limitations, enacting ethical agency (response-ability). These findings suggest that the core competency for instructional designers in the AI era lies not in technical proficiency but in relational sensitivity. This study advances educational technology by introducing agential realism as a theoretical lens, employing diffractive analysis methodologically, and reconceptualizing human-technology relations ontologically. It recommends that instructional design education systematically foster competencies in relational negotiation, reflective practice, and ethical response-ability, extending beyond prompt engineering skills.
