Abstract

This study aims to develop the components and procedures of a contextual note-taking strategy suitable for university learning environments. Although traditional summary-based note-taking strategies efficiently organize key information, they frequently overlook essential details and contextual cues, resulting in superficial understanding and limited retention. To address these limitations, this study employed Richey and Nelson’s (2004) design and development research framework, informed by Kintsch and van Dijk’s (1978) summarization theory and Mayer’s (2007) contextual effect theory. An extensive literature review yielded preliminary strategies, which were refined through two rounds of expert validation to ensure applicability and clarity. The finalized contextual note-taking strategy consists of three stages (pre-class, during-class, and post-class), eleven domains, sixteen sub-strategies, and fifty-nine detailed guidelines. It includes preparatory planning before class, contextual and visual recording during class, and restructuring and reflection after class. These findings clarify the concept of contextual note-taking and offer a systematic instructional framework that promotes learners’ comprehension, retention, and concentration. By providing a validated, practical model applicable to both high- and low-achieving students, this study advances existing note-taking research.
