Abstract

This study examines the social interactions of learners who have experienced live online lectures and the transformation of private space into public space due to the digital transformation of higher education during COVID-19. In particular, the study aims to observe learners' media performances and interactions in the live online lecture space and to materialize their access to the public space from the private one . In particular, it examines the ways in which participants’ gazes anonymously intersect with each other to perform ‘self- presentation’ and ‘self-surveillance’ in the lecture space. To do this, we conducted in-depth interviews with 13 undergraduate students at a non-metropolitan four-year university about their online learning experiences on Zoom between October 2021 and March 2024. All respondents are Digital Natives who have accumulated experiences with interactive media practices in their daily lives. The study results showed that the participants tended to interpret the Zoom online lecture experience as an extension of their everyday media performances and practices. In particular, they perceived this space as an in-between zone where the private and the public are simultaneously blurred and where they perform multiple layers of social interaction, including self-presentation, performance, and surveillance of other participants. The conclusion is that live online lectures are part of social interactions within the current digital media ecosystem, where students can display and expose their private space, voluntarily internalize the gaze of others, and thus continue to perform self-presentation and self-surveillance.
