Abstract
This paper examines the clock scenes in What Time Is It There? through Bill Brown’s “Thing Theory”, proposing a thing centered approach to interpreting cinema. The clock, as a thing, signifies modernity and contrasts with Tsai Ming-liang’s self-reflexivity and non-linear temporality. When rewound by Hsiao-kang and deprived of its function, the clock reveals its thingness, shaping not only the characters’ psychological states and actions but also the narrative. The rewound clock resonates with the mourning practices and disconnection of those who have lost a father or husband, while also underscoring Tsai’s auteurist identity and critique of modernity within cinematic modernism. By regarding the halted and rewound clock as a cinematic moment when a thing exceeds its function and asserts new presence, this paper considers how its thingness informs the film’s thematic consciousness in relation to Brown’s theory.
