Abstract
The significance of time in Wong Kar-wai’s films has been noted by many scholars. However, it has remained difficult to grasp the various dimensions of temporality in his films in a comprehensive way. This paper aims to examine Wong Kar-wai’s cinematic time through Gilles Deleuze’s theory of the three syntheses of time. In Difference and Repetition, Deleuze outlines three syntheses that constitute the present, past, and future: the living present as constituted by habit; the pure past as virtual and unconscious memory; and the empty form of time as the future, which marks an absolute break from the past. Wong Kar-wai’s films not only manifest all three dimensions of time described by Deleuze, but also reveal additional aspects of temporality that Deleuze did not fully address. With regard to the first synthesis, his films feature not only the habitual present but also the frequent intersection and brushing of multiple presents within multi-layered narratives. Concerning the second synthesis, they evoke not only the unconscious origin of repetitive compulsion but also a historical dimension as pure past. As for the third synthesis, Wong’s films depict the emergence of historical individuals who, on the basis of pure past as history, live through a new present—at once continuous with and different from the past—within the unfolding of history as a living present.
