Abstract
This paper analyzes the symbolic meanings of things featured in Kim Bora’s House of Hummingbird and the resignification of their meanings through Bill Brown’s concept of thing theory. The doors, dining table, and broken and shattered things in the film not only symbolize patriarchal social structures and the imbalance of hierarchy among family members but also function as signs that reveal the absurdities of South Korean society in the early 1990, the temporal background of the film. Furthermore, at specific moments, these things cease their symbolic or inherent functions and enter into a phase of revealing their “thingness,” as defined in Bill Brown’s seminal paper “Thing Theory”. This paper interprets these moments of functional cessation as transformative phenomena, where things transcend their original symbolic meanings and undergo resignification. The dining table, for instance, is resignified from a patriarchal symbol to one of family solidarity and hope. Similarly, the demolished urban spaces and the collapsed Seongsu Bridge are also resignified as manifestations of “thingness,” expanding the coming-of-age narrative of the protagonist, Eun-hee, into the contemporary political discourse. In this regard, the aim of this paper is to examine how these things, through the process of resignification, contribute to the narrative progression and thematic depth of the film in conjunction with Brown’s thing theory.
