이 논문은 ‘느린 영화’의 관점에서 차이밍량의 ‘행자’ 시리즈가 실행하는 영화 미학과 그 바탕으로서의 ‘매체적 시간성’을 고찰한다. 차이밍량의 ‘행자’ 시리즈는 그의 전작 장편 극영화들이 보여 온 롱테이크의 시공간성을 집약하면서 관객에게 새로운 영화적 체험을 안기고 영화의 시간성에 대한 물음을 일으킨다. <행자>, <서유>, <무무면>으로 이어지는 차이밍량의 ‘행자’ 시리즈는 극단적 느림을 독특한 영화미학으로 탐구하는 실험적 영화 연작이다. 승려의 옷을 입은 한 남자가 아주 천천히 발걸음을 옮기는 모습을오래도록 가만히 고정된 롱테이크에 담아 보여주는 쇼트들의 모음으로 이루어진 이 영화들은 동시대 세계영화의 주목할 만한 경향인 ‘느린 영화(slow cinema)’와 궤를 같이 하면서, ‘왜 느린 영화인가?’라는 물음에 대한 답을 찾게 한다. 차이밍량 ‘행자’ 시리즈의 극단적
Abstract
Tsai Ming-Liang's ‘Walker’ series (Walker, Journey To the West, No No Sleep) exlpores film aesthetics with extremely slow tempo, showing in long take shots how slowly a man dressed in the monk clothes walk on his way. These films belong to ‘slow cinema’, one of the most important trends in the contemporary cinema and give an answer to ‘why slow cinema?’. The extreme slowness of the cinematic images in Walker series make the spectator see the film medium as moving image from the other viewpoint, that is ‘time’. The spectator can perceive the still images in the moving images in these films due to their slowness. This is the way how to make ‘cinema of contemplation’ and the ‘pensive spectator’. Thus, the question ‘why slow cinema?’ is followed by the question ‘what is cinema?’. The discovery and experience which Tsai Ming-Liang's Walker series makes as for the present times and the film aesthetics enable us to see newly the media-aesthetical attributes and possibility of the film medium, and also the present lives. With ‘Walker’ series, Tsai Ming-Liang seeks to find out newly the aesthetic of life and cinema.
