Abstract
This study empirically examines the impact of five key components of intercultural communication—language, nonverbal communication, conversation style, business manners, and psychology and values—on the occurrence of conflicts in business settings between Korea and Japan. A questionnaire survey was administered to 237 businesspersons working in Korean and Japanese companies. The data were analyzed by nationality and gender using the Friedman test, the Mann-Whitney U test, and post-hoc analyses to assess differences and correlations in conflict scores for each communication factor. The results indicate that psychology and values had the greatest impact on conflict occurrence, whereas nonverbal communication was the least related to conflict. Korean respondents reported relatively higher conflict scores in psychology and values and conversation style, while Japanese respondents recorded higher scores in business manners, suggesting that they were more likely to perceive or experience conflicts in that area. The gender-based analysis revealed no significant differences for most factors; however, in business manners, female respondents reported higher conflict scores than male respondents. By adopting a quantitative approach and employing the Friedman test, the Mann-Whitney test, and post-hoc analyses, this study addresses the limitations of prior research, which has often focused solely on listing conflict factors or relied on case studies. In clarifying the relative influence and interrelationships among conflict factors, it contributes to the development of intercultural communication theory and provides fundamental data that may help in understanding and resolving business conflicts between Korea and Japan.
