Abstract

The deregulation of the airline market and the emergence of low-cost carriers (LCCs) have encouraged market growth. However, intensified competition has negatively impacted airline profitability. To address this challenge, airlines have implemented comprehensive revenue management systems designed to maximize revenue through optimal seat allocation and control across multiple fare products, despite limited seat capacity. However, due to the difficulty in accurately predicting future demand and the intense competition, airlines still struggle to achieve sufficient profits. In the traditional airline business model, most revenue was generated through the sale of all-inclusive fare products. However, with the rise of low-cost carriers, airlines have increased revenue by offering basic low-fare products and a variety of ancillary services. Recently, the development of commitment-option products as ancillary services, allowing use under specific conditions, has highlighted the need for a new approach to revenue management that incorporates these offerings. Commitment options are recognized as an effective way for airlines to respond to uncertain future demand and increase revenues, and research on various types of options is ongoing. The commitment option considered by the airline is linked to seat sales and influences seat allocation by fare product. Previous research has examined seat allocation and the effects of introducing individual option products. However, this study aims to address seat allocation and control issues by considering both the paid upgrade option product and the waiting option, in addition to the basic fare product. We will develop an optimization model and algorithm to solve this problem effectively. Through simulation experiments, we validate our algorithm by measuring revenue gains. To develop the optimization model, the concept of expected marginal revenue is applied to analyze the conditions under which revenue increases due to the introduction of commitment options. Theoretically, we will prove the conditions for revenue gains and present them as a proposition. Based on this theoretical approach, we propose a seat allocation algorithm that enables revenue increase across three or more fare products. To verify the validity of the developed model and algorithm, 500 simulation experiments were conducted to analyze revenue gains. The simulation results indicated that the sales of two commitment options increased revenue by 1.5% to 3.5%, depending on the demand level. Notably, the revenue increase from waiting option products was greater than that from paid upgrade option products. Although this study suggests directions for revenue management research on two specific commitment options, it does not address consumer behavior and acceptance of these options. Therefore, further research on consumer behavior and emotional perspectives is necessary for the successful introduction of various commitment options. This study will contribute to research on effective revenue management, particularly when considering the introduction of new and innovative option products.
