Abstract

The purpose of this study is to compare phonological education in South and North Korea. First, the textbooks in South and North Korea both present 19 consonants and 21 vowels, but the textbooks in South Korea focuses on systematizing phonemes according to classification criteria, while those in North Korea focuse on distinguishing sounds according to pronunciation differences. Regarding phonological variations, the study found no significant difference in content. However, the textbooks in South Korea mainly show phonological variations that cause differences between underlying and surface forms, whereas the textbooks in North Korea mainly show phonological variations that cause differences between written and pronounced forms. The phonological education in South and North Korea differs not only in educational contents but also in methods. Therefore, when preparing for phonological education for the unification era, it will be necessary to pay attention to the phonological education in North Korea, which emphasizes the practicality of grammar education and pays attention to practical speech.
