Abstract
The purpose of this article is to deepen the previous understanding by grasping the current status and meaning of Mahan rituals in the Boseong area. As a result of the review, it can be summarized into five categories. ①Mahan shared ritual ideas rooted in heaven-earth-people. ②In addition to transcendent nature, ancestral rites were also held. ③Rituals were located throughout life from life to the moment of death. ④Ritual objects were used as everyday items, but ritual equipment has been used since the 5th century. ⑤Ipju(立柱) rituals were representative archaeological material that proved Mahan’s identity with a sense of community that matched archaeological reality and records. The five aspects identified in the Boseong area are common in the Yeongsangang River system. On the other hand, there are differences in burial customs, such as horse-related data from the Hyeonchon ruins and the absence of large-scale tombs. On the other hand, the meaning of the ritual was aimed at a pluralistic function of praying for the well-being and peace of an individual or group, along with the leader’s authority and leadership over community values. Among them, it was noted that the Ipju ritual included spiritual meaning in the process of being integrated into Baekje. This ritual should be highly valued in that it was also recognized in Baekje royal tombs, such as the Songsan-ri Ancient Tombs in Gongju. This article aims not only to restore Mahan’s huge tomb and gilt-bronze crown, but also to use it to express and practice spiritual culture. This is because the historical value of archaeological data can be made clear when action is found through material medium and meaning through spirit.
