Abstract
This study aims to analyze the formation and transformation of the folk research projects conducted by the National Folk Museum of Korea (NFMK), and to suggest future directions for their sustainable development. Since its establishment in 1946 as the National Museum of Ethnology, the museum has undergone several name changes and organizational restructurings, evolving into its current form. Focusing primarily on the museum’s published folk research reports, this study examines the development of its folk research initiatives, with particular attention to the mid- to long-term plans implemented by the Department of Folklore Research. In its early stages, the museum’s investigations centered on traditional folk culture such as village faiths and shamanism. Over time, these studies expanded thematically and geographically. After the museum’s relocation to its current site in 1993, folk research became more systematic, covering topics such as traditional housing, marketplaces, fishing villages, and overseas Korean communities. Since the 2000s, the research scope has continued to grow, encompassing urban folklore, comparative folklore, and modern everyday life culture. Beginning in 2007, the “Year of Regional Folk Culture” project facilitated regional-level investigations across the country. Following this, the museum reorganized its research categories into regional folklore, historical folklore, and comparative folklore, while strengthening efforts in contemporary life culture and international comparative research. This study analyzes a total of 289 folk research reports conducted by NFMK, tracing the formation and evolving structure of its research system. Based on these findings, the study proposes the expansion of professional research personnel and the improvement of research methodologies to enhance the long-term sustainability of the museum’s folk research initiatives.
