Abstract
This article explores how medieval Jews understood Psalm 67 and why they nicknamed it the Menorah Psalm. Psalm 67 is similar to Psalm 65. The divine leading and praising of Psalm 66 results into his blessing of Psalm 67. This three songs look like serial psalms. For Judaism the Psalm is known to recite before leaving a trip. According to Divine office of the Catholic church, Psalm 67 is supposed to be read on Wednesday Vespers or Tuesday Lauds. The New Korean Hymnal 75 arranges Alexander A. Pieters’s Korean translation of Psalm 67. Some Christian preachers call it the Paternoster of the Old Testament. However, it is strikingly concentrical. There are seven stanzas: twice three two-line stanzas, having one of three lines in the middle. The symmetrical structure of Psalm 67 is reminded of the menorah of the Tabernacle. Jewish people read and praise the Psalm as a testament to the divine care and protection of God, a message that, like the menorah light, spreads gradually. Some of commentators regard this psalm as completion of priestly benediction in the Book of Number 6:24-26. A few readers may argue that this paper is not proper for academic circles because the writer reflects and mentions the Jewish Kabbala perspective. The esoteric understanding of the medieval Kabbala, however, ingeniously connects Psalm 67 to the Menorah. If we remember how medieval Christianity was antagonistic towards Judaism, we should be inclined to listen to Jewish understanding. Thanks to Jewish insight we get a new perspective about this psalm. Medieval Judaism teaches how the Menorah and Psalm 67 relate to each other. The poet can understand Psalm 67 within the context of the Menorah tradition, and also s/he can read the Menorah from the Psalm.
