Abstract

Recent studies on the composition of the Psalter show a strong tendency to recognize a linear development in the Book of Psalter, contrasting Book I-III with Book IV-V. They include a view that the Psalter reflects an itinerary of prayer ‘from lament to praise.’ This article questions such a view and looks into the composition of the Psalter on the basis of the distribution of the lamentations. The itinerary of ‘lament-praise-thanksgiving-lament’ is observable in Book I. Book II and III are also concluded by a lamentation that is inserted deliberately by a redactor. Book V deserves a particular attention. Praise reaches to the heights in the Psalms of the Kingship of YHWH in Book IV. Then, in Book V the Halleluiah Psalms (predominantly praises), which are the proper element of the Book, are followed by the Psalms of David (predominantly lamentations) taken from Book I-III. Such a composition reveals that the redactor wanted to form an itinerary that moves from lament to praise and then back to lament. This leads us to understand praises in the Psalter as confessions of faith in God uttered in the same circumstances of life from which lamentations arose in the beginning.
