이 논문은 세속주의와 세속화의 관점에서 그리스도교와 문화의 관계에 대해 탐구한다. 오늘날 교회 당국자들은 세속주의 문화의 도전이 신앙의 위기를 불러왔고 그래서 새로운 복음화가 필요하다고 말한다. 세속주의에 대한 교회의 이해는 다소 부정적 뉘앙스를 풍긴다. 하지만 세속주의 문화를 올바로 이해하기 위해서는 “세속적인 것”과 “세속화”와 “세속주의”라는 개념들을 분리해서 접근할 필요가 있다. 사실, 일종의 세계관 또는 이데올로기로서의 세속주의는 모든 지역에서 똑 같은 방식으로 적용할 수 있는 명료한 원칙이 아니다. 현대 문화의 많은 다양한 현상들이 세속주의라는 이름으로 설명되고 있다. 또 다른 한편으로 보면, 현대의 세속성은 서구 그리스도교 문화의 산물이다. 세속화 이론의 밑바탕에는 강생신비라는 그리스도론적 전제가 깔려있다. 오늘날 종교와 문화는 서로 긴밀히 연결되어 있다. 현대 종교학자들이 지적하듯이, 종교는 언제나 문화적 컨텍스트 안에 서 있다. 또한 문화적 세계화의 과정 속에서 그리스도교 문화와 세속 문화의 경계가 거의 사라지고 있다. 사실 종교와 문화는 언제나 상호작용을 통해 한 사회의 정치와 윤리와 미학적 규범을 생산하고 구성한다. 따라서 오늘날 교회가 현대 문화에 대해 어떤 태도를 취할 것인가에 대한 질문에 대답하기란 매우 어렵다. 오늘날 교회는 그리스도교 예언적 전통을 다시 회복해야 한다. 교회는 사회적 불평등과 차별을 야기하는 자본주의 물질문화에 대응할 수 있는 대안적 문화에 대한 새로운 비전을 제시할 수 있어야 한다. 그러기 위해서 무엇보다 세속문화 속에 서 있는 교회 자신의 쇄신이 먼저 요청된다.
Abstract
This essay addresses the relationship between Christianity and culture in terms of secularism and secularization. Today, many church officials argue that secularism is engulfing contemporary culture. Secularism is pervading the church and prevailing all around us. Pope Benedict XVI called for the new evangelization, which is focused on re-proposing the Gospel to those who have experienced a serious crisis of faith due to secularization. However, as Jose Casanova points out, we have to keep in mind the basic distinction between "the secular" as a central modern epistemic category, "secularization" as an analytical conceptualization of modern world-historical processes, and "secularism" as a worldview and ideology. In fact, secularism is not a clear and unequivocal principle that ought to be applied everywhere in the same way. Secularism is complex because it is made up of a set of moral aims and institutional arrangements. Secularity is a religious phenomenon. God has disappeared by becoming so immanent that there is no difference between the sacred and the secular. Contemporary secularity is actually implicit in classical christology as it was defined in the great church councils of the fourth and fifth centuries. Religion and culture becomes more interconnected and therefore more complex. Contemporary scholars of religion have focused more and more on the interactions and relationships between religion and culture, which requires embedding religion in its contexts. Religions are matters of practice. Like religion, culture is not an abstraction but a practice. Religion and culture produce, reproduce, and structure politics, ethics, and aesthetics that are performed in a society. In the process of cultural globalization, the line separating Christian culture and secular culture has been gradually eroding. How should Christian relate to contemporary culture? Do we flee, fight, set up an alternative, or what? It is very difficult to answer the question. The church has to revive a prophetic vision within the Christian tradition and provide an empathetic and imaginative power that confronts hegemonic powers always operating in contemporary culture. To do that, the church in a secular culture first of all needs to renew herself.
