Abstract
Jonathan Edwards‘ doctrine of justification intricately explores the relationship between faith and works. Through his Religious Affections, Edwards critiques false faith, advocating that true faith inherently manifests in a holy disposition. Scholarly debates surrounding Edwards’ views have ranged from interpretations of his theology as “dispositional soteriology” to its alignment with preparationalism. While some argue Edwards’ inclusivist tendencies and preparationalist views reflect departures from Reformed traditions, others stress Edwards’ fidelity to covenant theology and union with Christ as central to his soteriology. This article highlights the redemptive-historical framework as key to understanding Edwards’ perspective on faith and works. By situating Edwards’ doctrine of justification within redemptive history, the study reveals his holistic vision of faith and works as responses to God’s sovereign grace, culminating in the believer’s sanctification and ultimate glorification.
