Abstract
This article examines Jonathan Edwards' soteriology. He developed Reformed soteriology in Eighteenth-Century New England. His soteriology focuses on dispositional transformation in human mind. In his soteriology, Edwards describes the dispositional transformation of a saint in the order of salvation. So, we call it "Dispositional Soteriology."In his own ontology, Edwards understands God and humans as dispositional beings. God has a disposition to communicate Himself to others. For the communication, God creates this world and saves His peoples as communicative partners. Humans act according to his disposition. Based on this dispositional ontology, Edwards unfolds his soteriology according to the change of disposition in humans. According to Edwards, Adam's fall brought the transformation of good disposition to evil one within himself. In this process, the Holy Spirit left humans. Edwards regards regeneration as the reverse of original sin. Regeneration means the change of a saint's disposition to good one. The Holy Spirit is infused to saints. Justification means the approval of dispositional transformation in God's judge. In sanctification, a saint shows his inward dispositional transformation as the fruits of the Holy Spirit in his life. Edwards connects the redemptive work of the Holy Spirit with the dispositional transformation in human mind. We can find the concept of 'disposition' in Edwards' Reformed forebears. Here we realize that Edwards' dispositional soteriology is succeeded from his Reformed forebears such as Francis Turretin, Peter Van Mastricht, and John Owen. Edwards describes the redemptive work of the Holy Spirit in human mind with the concept of 'disposition.'
