본 연구는 그리스도인의 삶 가운데 자주 간과되는 선한 행실(good works)에 대한 문제에 대하여 조나단 에드워즈의 시각을 통해 고찰하였다. 에드워즈를 주목할 만한 이유가 되는 것은 그는 목회자로서 부흥의 현장 속에서 한 때 회심했고 나름 성령의 체험을 했다는 사람들이 어느 순간 마치 “개가 토해 놓은 것으로 돌아가는” 것처럼 죄의 모습으로 돌아가는 모습을 통해 깊은 고민을 했던 목회자였기 때문이다. 에드워즈는 구원의 삶을 무엇보다도 새 생명의 관점으로 이해하였다. 그에게 있어서 새 생명의 근거는 성령이 우리 안에 내주하시어 새로운 원리(new principle)로서 새 생명의 행동을 지배한다고 보았기에 성도의 선한 행실은 새 생명과 불가분적 관계인 것으로 보았다. 특별히 새 생명, 새 창조의 개념을 구속사적 관점을 통해 설명하는 에드워즈의 시각이 특징적이다. 참된 미덕은 형이상학 용어로 진행되는 에드워즈의 논문이지만 내용면에서는 선한 행실이 하나님을 향한 사랑에서 이웃을 향해 흘러나오는 것이라는 신학적 고찰이다. 존재의 크기에 따라 존재 일반을 향한 사랑과 특정 존재를 향한 사랑 사이에는 분명히 차등이 있으며, 유익 때문에 대상을 사랑하는 것이 아니라 대상 자체를 사랑할 수 있기 위해서는 결국 성령으로만 가능함을 지적하였다. 최선의 문제에서는 선한 행실을 강조하는 것이 마치 알미니안이나 가톨릭이 되는 것으로 오해되는 점을 반박하였다. 그 문제는 에드워즈 때에는 알미니안이었지만, 오늘날에는 복음주의라고 할 수 있다. 그리스도인에게 있어서 선한 행실은 최선을 다하면 족한 차원의 문제가 아니라 그 자체가 하나님이 정하신 질서에 부합하는 “자연적 적합성”의 문제임을 논하였다. 실체와 표징은 논의를 마감하는 의미에서 구원과 선행의 관계를 다소 이론적으로 정리한 것이다. 표징은 실체가 아니지만 표징이 없는 실체가 없으며, 표징은 본인과 주변 사람에게 확신을 주는 유익이라는 점에서 청교도 전통에서만 아니라 개혁주의 전통에서도 강조해온 특징이다. 에드워즈는 구원과 선한 행실의 관계를 실체와 표징의 관점에서 하나님이 그렇게 정하신 “자연적 적합성”의 문제라고 설명하였다.
Abstract
This paper is to reconsider one of recurring issues in Christian life today, that is, a good-works aspect is often overlooked and not properly emphasized in today’s context. For that we may learn from Jonathan Edwards, for he was a pastor who had questions on what is true faith and what makes one a true Christian, witnessing repeatedly that people after professing their faith and even claiming to have had the experience of the Spirit fall to sin like “the dog returns to his vomit.” Edwards understood Christian life as new life, which began by the Holy Spirit dwelling in our heart as a new principle. Particularly, the way Edwards forges his understanding of new life or new creation through the redemptive historical perspective is very intriguing. True virtue, though sounds unfamiliar, is Edwards’s metaphysical rendition on the subject in view, where he precisely unpacks how true virtue is nothing abut Christian good works that should flow from God to the neighbors. There are the differences in the degree of beings from being-in-general to particular beings, and the degree of virtue is accordingly decided with regard to its objects. And it takes the Holy Spirit in order to love the object for who it is rather than what it is for us. The problem of doing one’s best is to protect good works from the distortions of Arminians and Roman Catholics. The threat was Arminians at the time of Edwards but evangelicals today. The issue is not abut doing one’s best in practising good works but that good works befit God’s constituted reality, that is the same as to say that it is “natural fitness” in Edwards’s classification. Reality and sign is a sort of theoretical summation to support the discussion in view. Sign is not reality, but there is no reality without its own sign, and for Edwards sign is beneficial to us more than to God. The intricate relationship between salvation(reality) and good works(sign) has been a hallmark of Puritan tradition as well as Reformed tradition. For Edwards, it is about how God constituted everything and, therefore, the issue of natural fitness.
