Abstract
This study systematically reviewed and conducted a meta-analysis on the effects of exercise interventions on physical function in older adults with disabilities. Sixteen experimental studies published in Korean academic journals between 2010 and 2025, all incorporating pre–post comparisons, were selected for analysis. Meta-analyses were conducted using R version 4.0.4, and the methodological quality of each study was evaluated with the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool (RoB 2.0). A total of 52 data points were extracted to calculate effect sizes (Hedges’ g), assess publication bias, and generate Forest and Funnel plots with trim-and-fill adjustments. The results indicated small effect sizes for body composition, upper-limb strength, flexibility, and functional mobility, whereas moderate effects were observed for lower-limb strength, cardiorespiratory endurance, and balance. Notably, improvements in lower-limb strength and balance play an important role in enhancing mobility and preventing falls among older adults with disabilities. Overall, the findings reinforce the evidence supporting exercise interventions for this population and highlight the need for more standardized intervention protocols. The results further provide practical implications for developing community-based exercise programs, rehabilitation strategies, and health management plans. Continued research with larger samples and long-term follow-up designs is recommended to support tailored physical activity interventions aimed at maintaining functional capacity and improving quality of life in older adults with disabilities.
