초록

The main metrical devices of early poems of Cho Ji-hoon are uneven trimeter and tetrameter. Lots of variations and exceptions of metrical standard are found in the poems. The rhythmical sense of his poems caused by trimeter is also based on the sense of stability engendered by tetrameter. This double structure of metrical scheme is his unique technique. We can find it in his well-wrought poems such as <Nakhwa(落花)>, <Sanbang(山房)>, and this mixed and overlapped metrical system helps to express the pleasure in solidarity and calm and composed feeling in quiet and tranquil environment. The arrangement of metrical lines and the principle of composition of the poem <Seungmu(僧舞)> are a typical example of cross-connected metrical system. Slow, flat rhythm of tetrameter and fast, irregular rhythm of uneven trimeter are mixed in it. This aesthetic structure is suitable to expressing the movement of dancing and the figure of dancer. On the other hand, the symmetry of form makes balance of sense of rhythm, and variations of metrical scheme express interest and pleasure reminded of the movement of butterfly which is associated by the dancing. We can find a useful clue for studying the rhythmic character in free verse of modern Korean poetry by analyzing the rhythmic structure of Cho Ji-hoon's early poems.
