Abstract

This essay intends to consider the double-sided characteristics in the early poems of Korean traditional poet, Cho Ji-Hoon. Through this study, I will examine the meaning of the various imagery and tones as an aesthetic strategy. By clarifying the poetic structure in his early poems and the attitude of cognition about modern world, I will look into the continuity and variation in Korean traditional poetry. Early poems of Cho Ji-Hoon who wanted to follow the vision and language of Chung Ji-Young can be seen to show a poetic world based on traditional world of view. He illustrated his own poetic perspective with a traditional image and rhythm in his whole lifetime. But he had modernist perspective, specially included French Symbolism about literature in his early era, too. Cho Ji-Hoon who tried to establish the unique poetic vision often used the principle of contemplation about nature and life in his poems arise from traditional word formation. It presents the sense of balance between the subject and the object. His poetic contributions in the history of Korean literature is to set up a foundation of traditional poetics.
