Abstract
This study examines the transformation of the Hua–Yi worldview (Sino–barbarian distinction) in the early Northern Song period by analyzing Lu Zhen’s Chengyaolu. Compiled in 1008 during an envoy mission to the Khitan Liao under Emperor Zhenzong’s order, the work reflects a unique diplomatic environment shortly after the Chanyuan Treaty. Lu Zhen emphasized that, despite prolonged Liao rule, the Youzhou region maintained its ethnic and cultural continuity with the Central Plain, viewing it as part of the “Chinese domain.” At the same time, he observed the Khitan adoption and emulation of Chinese institutions and customs, interpreting such changes as signs of their potential for cultural transformation. While he still framed the Khitan as “Yi” who fell short of the civilizational standard, he envisioned them as potential members of the Sino-centric order in the future. His summary of the Khitan’s reception of the Song envoys as ‘fearing authority and cherishing virtue’ underscored his recognition of the treaty’s practical effect and reaffirmed that the Song’s diplomatic status was, to some extent, preserved. However, such favorable views were not constant throughout the Song period; in the Renzong and Shenzong reigns, distrust toward the Khitan and criticism of the treaty’s humiliating nature became more prominent. This study argues that Chengyaolu reveals the Song literati’s flexible perceptions of the Khitan, shaped by shifting political and diplomatic contexts, and calls for understanding the Hua–Yi worldview as a historically contingent and dynamic construct rather than a fixed ideology.
