본 논문은 아스트리드 린드그렌의 아동문학 『라이언하트 형제』에 수록된 두 가지 판본 의 삽화를 비교 분석함으로써, 동일한 텍스트가 시대와 미학에 따라 어떻게 다르게 시각화되 고 해석되는지를 고찰한다. 1973년 초판의 일론 비클란드 삽화는 섬세하고 서정적인 스타일로 형제애와 희망, 저항의 메시지를 구현하며, 아날로그적 향수와 정서적 안정감을 제공한다. 반면 2018년 예스페르 발 데르스텐의 개정판 삽화는 추상적이며 어두운 양식을 통해 현대적 불안과 정체성, 고립, 제도 적 폭력에 대한 비판적 감정을 시각화한다. 본 논문은 두 일러스트레이터의 시각언어가 기호학적 이미지 분석과 인터미디어성 이론을 통해 어떻게 서로 다른 내러티브 효과를 창출하는지를 논의하며, 삽화가 단지 보조적 이미지 가 아닌 독립적 해석 주체이자 문화·정치적 담론의 반영물임을 밝힌다. 나아가 1970년대 복지국가적 이상과 2010년대의 문화산업화 및 포스트민족주의 담론이 각기 어떻게 삽화의 시각적 전략에 반영되었는지를 분석함으로써, 텍스트-이미지 상호작용의 사회문화적 의미를 확장하고자 한다.
Abstract
This study examines the visual narratives and sociopolitical reinterpretations present in two illustrated editions of Astrid Lindgren’s Bröderna Lejonhjärta (The Brothers Lionheart). It analyzes how the same literary text is differently visualized and interpreted across time and artistic styles. Ilon Wikland’s 1973 illustrations are characterized by delicate, nostalgic realism that emphasizes themes of brotherhood, resistance, and hope within a warm domestic setting, reflecting the ideals of the Swedish welfare state. In contrast, Jesper Waldersten’s 2018 reinterpretation employs abstract, dark, and fragmented imagery to evoke existential isolation, trauma, and critique of institutional violence, aligning with a post-national cultural discourse. Through a semiotic image analysis and intermediality framework, this paper argues that illustrations act not merely as visual supplements but as interpretive agents that reflect and reshape the sociocultural and political context of their times. The comparison reveals how visual strategies both reflect and transform the emotional and ideological reception of classic texts, offering a deeper understanding of the ideological and aesthetic functions of illustrated children's literature
