Abstract
This study examines how Czesław Miłosz’s poetic works portray the human condition and address the question of good and evil. Writing out of the turbulent history of twentieth-century Poland, Miłosz consistently asserts the value of human life and its transcendent quality. His works reveal a Manichean imagination that challenges the framework of traditional Judeo-Christian thought. They depict the material world as governed by ‘evil laws’, on account of which human beings experience suffering and alienation. At the same time, the poet emphasizes the ‘divine spark’ within humanity, envisioning the possibility of transcendence through poetic language. This paper argues that Miłosz’s Manichean perspective not only reconfigures the dichotomy of good and evil, but also affirms the enduring value of human existence and the salvific potential of language. By doing so, it introduces Miłosz’s poetry—hitherto underrepresented in Korean Slavic literary studies—into the field of scholarship and offers an overview of his poetic vision.
